Cannes awards divisive thriller

-

Julia Ducournau's thriller Titane took the Palme d'or prize at the Cannes Film Festival. Ducournau is the second female to receive the honour, after Jane Campion's win for The Piano 28 years ago. Jury president Spike Lee mistakenly revealed the gender-bending, genre-blending winner prematurely at the start of the night. Meanwhile, Leos Carax picked up the best director award for his musical Annette. There were two ties: Directors Nadav Lapid and Apichatpong Weerasethakul shared the Jury Prize for their films Ahed's Knee and Memoria, respectively; and Asghar Farhadi's A Hero and Juho Kuosmanen's Compartment No. 6 both won the Grand Prize.
