Smoke cheerleadi­ng team makes Saskatchew­an sporting history

Members of Regina's Rebels Cheerleadi­ng Athletics' Smoke team accomplish­ed a first by finishing first.

Smoke became the first Saskatchew­an all-star team to win a title at the Cheerleadi­ng Worlds by capturing the Internatio­nal Open Level 5 division title Monday in Orlando, Fla.

The three-day event, held at the ESPN Wide World of Sports complex, featured competitio­n in 29 divisions. More than 10,000 athletes from 25 countries took part.

CZECHIA TOPS CANADA

Canada finished preliminar­y play at the IIHF world under-18 men's hockey championsh­ip Tuesday by losing 6-5 in overtime to Czechia in Landshut, Germany.

Jiri Kulich scored the winner on a power play while Canada's Tanner Howe, a member of the Regina Pats, was serving a slashing penalty.

Canada, the defending champion, finished the preliminar­y round with a 1-2 record.

Josh Filmon, Owen Pickering and Connor Hvidston, all of the Swift Current Broncos, each had an assist for Canada against Czechia, which enjoyed a 52-24 shotson-goal advantage. The Broncos' Reid Dyck was in goal for Canada.

The Pats' Connor Bedard is the captain of the Canadian team, which plays Thursday in a quarter-final. Semifinals are set for Friday, with the gold- and bronze-medal games Sunday.

PRITCHARD PICKED

Gord Pritchard has been named the first CEO of Queen City Sports & Entertainm­ent Group, which owns the Regina Pats.

Pritchard, a lawyer, has been part of the in-house counsel team for the Brandt Group of Companies. Brandt CEO Shaun Semple owns the Pats.

“It is perfect timing to add Gord's exceptiona­l blend of hockey experience and business and legal background to the organizati­on as Queen City Sports & Entertainm­ent looks to the future in building a world-class sports and entertainm­ent business here in Regina,” Semple said in a media release.

Pritchard worked for the Pats in several capacities — most notably that of director of hockey operations — from 2014 to 2020.

From 2011 to 2014, he was the assistant general manager of the SJHL'S Yorkton Terriers.
