Estevan a win away from third SJHL title

The Estevan Bruins are within one victory of their third SJHL title.

Estevan can triumph as early as Tuesday. The Bruins face host Flin Flon Bombers in Game 6 of the best-of-seven final.

The Bruins assumed a 3-2 series lead Saturday by winning 3-2 in overtime at Affinity Place.

Estevan's Nolan Jones forced overtime by scoring with 5.8 seconds left in the third period. Olivier Pouliot settled matters 12:13 into sudden-death play.

Regina-born Eric Pearce had a goal and an assist for Estevan, which won titles in 1985 and 1999.

WARRIORS WIN

The Moose Jaw Warriors are off to Round 2 of the WHL playoffs after eliminatin­g the Saskatoon Blades on Friday.

Moose Jaw is to meet the Winnipeg Ice in a best-of-seven Eastern Conference semifinal.

The first two games will be held Friday and Saturday in Winnipeg. The series will then move to Moose Jaw's Mosaic Place for May 10 and 11 games, both 7 p.m. starts.

Games 5 to 7, if needed, go May 13 in Winnipeg, May 15 in Moose Jaw, and May 17 in Winnipeg.

Moose Jaw advanced by doubling Saskatoon 6-3 in Game 5 on Friday at Mosaic Place. The Warriors' Jagger Firkus led the way with two goals and one assist.

Winnipeg (53-10-3-2) boasted the WHL'S best regular-season record and was 5-1-0-1 versus Moose Jaw (37-24-4-3).

BADMINTON'S BEST

The Regina High Schools Athletic Associatio­n badminton championsh­ips were held Saturday at Luther College High School.

The gold medallists were John Kozak of Leboldus (boys singles), Nataly Eng of O'neill (girls singles), Caleb Woodrow and Mathew Takach of Leboldus (boys doubles), Jenny Liu and Jiayan Cau of Campbell (girls doubles) and Duane Sicat and Althea Pesquera of O'neill (mixed doubles).
