Riot fall to Valkyries in football final
The Regina Riot's season came to an end on Sunday with a defeat in the Western Women's Canadian Football League's Prairie Conference Championship at the hands of the Saskatoon Valkyries.
Saskatoon led 15-0 at the half and while Aimee Kowalski connected with Shanelle Rioux for a touchdown in the fourth quarter to get the Riot on the board, that wouldn't be enough as the Valkyries went on to win 19-9.
Saskatoon will now host the Calgary Rage this Saturday in the WWCFL final.
REGINA RED SOX
After rattling off four straight wins, the Regina Red Sox went 2-3 over the last seven days, splitting games with Fort Mcmurray and Weyburn, while losing to Swift Current.
The Red Sox now sit with a record of 9-9, which puts them in second place in the East Division of the Western Canadian Baseball League.
Regina now hits the road this week for away games in Weyburn, Lethbridge and Okotoks before returning home to host Medicine Hat in a doubleheader on June 27.
GIRLS' HOCKEY
The Regina Grrrowl girls' hockey team capped off an impressive spring season with four gold medals in four tournaments.
These players, who have been together since 2018, won the Can-american Spring AAA Showdown in Melville, the Alberta Champions Cup in Edmonton, the North American Hockey Classic in Winnipeg and the 2023 Summer Showdown in Minneapolis, going 20-0 the entire way.
There were seven girls on the team from Regina, three from White City and Balgonie, two from Swift Current and one from each of Melville, Kipling, Gravelbourg and Assiniboia.
LOCAL RUGBY
Regina senior rugby teams travelled to play Saskatoon on the weekend.
In the senior women's division, the Regina Ravens beat the Saskatoon Kirin 91-14, while the Regina Rage defeated the Saskatoon Wild Oat Women 36-29.
In the senior men's division, the Campion Grads got past the Saskatoon Gophers 47-27 and the Regina Rogues beat the Saskatoon Krems 55-22. The Regina Condors lost to the Saskatoon Badgers 65-12 and the Regina Highlanders were defeated 43-22 by the Saskatoon Wild Oats.
