Charges stayed in 2021 death

- BRANDON HARDER Postmedia News bharder@postmedia.com

The murder charges faced by two women in the October 2021 Regina death of Peri A. N. Redwood have been stayed by the Crown, but the investigation into the death is still ongoing.

“Our investigators continue to work on this file. It is very much an open investigation,” a Regina Police Service (RPS) spokesperson said in an emailed response to a request for comment on the case Thursday.

Jenell Dawn Cote was 32 years old when charged in April 2022 with second-degree murder in the death of 24-year-old Redwood. She was the second of two to be charged with murder in the death, but was the first to receive a stay, which was entered Feb. 13, 2023, according to Regina provincial court staff.

Hope Reign Cyr was 23 when she was charged with second-degree murder in February 2022. A stay of proceedings was entered in relation to Cyr's charge on Nov. 20, 2023, court staff relayed.

Crown prosecutor Chris White confirmed the stays Wednesday.

“The reason the charges were stayed is because the Crown did not have a reasonable likelihood of conviction as against either individual. In those situations, we are duty bound to cease the prosecution,” he said in an email.

Little has been said about the circumstances surrounding Redwood's death, which Regina police classified as the city's ninth homicide of 2021.

An RPS news release from that time said police were dispatched around 11 a.m. on Oct. 13, 2021 to a home on the 1700 block of Ottawa Street “for a report of a deceased individual” who was identified as Redwood.

Police are asking anyone who has any information they feel may assist them with the case to contact them by phone at 306-777-6500 or, if they want to remain anonymous, to provide information through Crime Stoppers by calling 1-800222-8477.
