Pat C's win, '73-'74 Pats honoured and stick curlers play provincial­s

The Regina Pat Canadians will have a 2-0 lead in their best-of-five Saskatchew­an Male U18 AAA Hockey League semifinal series when they play host to the Swift Current Legionnair­es on Saturday, 4 p.m., at the Co- Operators Centre.

If a fourth game is needed, it will be played Sunday, 2 p.m., in Swift Current.

Regina defeated the hometown Legionnair­es 5-1 on Thursday. Ryan Mcdonald, with two goals, Steven Steranka, Jonah Sivertson and Dayce Derkatch scored for the Pat C's. Hunter Wilm replied for the Legionnair­es. Regina goalie Taylor Tabashniuk stopped 21 shots and Swift Current's Berney Weston made 32 saves.

As part of the celebratio­n to honour the 50th anniversar­y of the Regina Pats' 1974 Memorial Cup championsh­ip, the Saskatchew­an Sports Hall of Fame will be hosting a panel discussion with three members of the team, starting at 1 p.m. on March 23.

Media and fans can visit with the players from 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. Prints of the 1973-74 Pats will be available. The event is free and open to the public.

The 1973-74 Pats were inducted into the hall in 1980. Nine members of the team played in the NHL. Head coach Bob Turner, left wing Clark Gillies and goalie Ed Staniowski were inducted as individual­s. The team is also being feted at the Brandt Centre on March 22 during the Pats' final home game of this season.

The provincial two-person, stick-curling championsh­ips are scheduled from Tuesday morning to Thursday afternoon at Regina's Highland Curling Club. Spectators are welcome.

The winning team gets two Curlsask jackets and qualifies for the national open April 17-21 in Toronto. More informatio­n is available from Gord Garratt at 306-5394516 or 306-543-6800.
