Saskatchewan can keep doing better

- Mervyn Lang, Regina

Saskatchewan was treated to a wonderful week of amazing curling at the recent Montana's Brier.

As the week went by, crowds at a packed Brandt Centre grew, showing their appreciation for the skill, determination, great sportsmanship and dignity demonstrated by Mike Mcewen's Saskatchewan rink. Mcewen was defeated in the final.

It was also a class act for Ernie Richardson to meet with them and show his support. The picture of Ernie Richardson with the Mcewen rink will adorn the walls of my office for the rest of my life!

Saskatchewan fans have always been known for being gracious and welcoming hosts for many international and national events.

The letter by Sharon Tod of Winnipeg in the March 24 Leader-post regarding her experiences as a Grey Cup guest was a reminder we must be open to visitors and be respectful. It is really sad she experienced this treatment during the 2022 Grey Cup. This is not us. We can do better.

Let us never yield to the negative behaviour creeping into our local politics where confrontation replaces concerns and honesty. We see this in current negotiations with our teachers' strike, where our premier is using billboards to build a case against teachers.

Fighting with the federal government at every turn is not helping us, either. And copying or emulating the style of the clown who once lived in the White House is shameful.

We need our government to fix our education and healthcare systems. Our teachers care deeply about their students and have been forced to start job action. They need help and to be heard.

The government team needs to step up and negotiate a fair settlement. Be transparent and work in good faith. This month's week of curling was a welcome respite from the woes we as a province face. We always were a people with optimism and hope — not people living with lies and divisiveness.

We are the “land of the living skies“and an immensely proud province. We take pride in how we genuinely care for each other.
