Regina musician K-anthony surprised, but grateful for Juno Christian/gospel win
Regina's K-anthony expressed complete surprise that his name was called for Christian/gospel album of the year at last weekend's Juno Awards in Halifax.
Born Kevin Anthony Fowler, the singer-songwriter said he got a bit light-headed, but was able to compose himself before giving his acceptance speech.
“Never in my wildest imagination would I have thought that I would be on this stage,” he said after stepping up to the podium and singing out “to God be the glory!”
K-anthony went on to thank his family, including wife Kamelia Burrell-fowler, daughters Nia- Olivia and Nyla-jade, and son Noah.
“It's really good for me to have family who is in tune with what I'm doing,” he said in a recent interview.
“Also, they allow me to relax, have fun, go play games with them, take my mind off of the work and that helps to rejuvenate me and allows me to be better.”
K-anthony was recognized at the Junos for his latest album, Arrow. He said the win was a moment to reflect, be grateful and appreciate his family for their effect on his life.
“Their consistent encouragement and support is something that I cherish.”
His children also make music and listen to his melodies, giving their input when he writes songs at home. His oldest daughter, Nia- Olivia, plays violin while Nyla-jade and Noah play piano.
“All of my kids have been in a (music) video that I've done, but the last one that I shot in California, the youngest one was in that video,” he added.
“I try to allow them to not feel distant from the work that I'm doing.” K-anthony's favourite part of attending the Junos this year was meeting people and networking. He enjoyed talking to Connor Price, who was nominated for breakthrough artist of the year, rap album/ep of the year, and rap single of the year.
“He was so humble and we just chatted and exchanged contact information and have even been contacting each other since,” K-anthony said.
“That's what the Junos does. It bring people closer, I would say.”
The Regina musician is excited to release more music and is currently working on a new project.
“I'm always writing,” he said. “I'm always working on new music, possibly some new performances. Especially since the Junos happened, I'm looking forward to representing Canada (and) representing the area I live in Canada as much as I can.”
