Blades and Warriors to square off in Game 7 for ticket to WHL final

The Moose Jaw Warriors and Saskatoon Blades will meet in Game 7 on Tuesday night for a trip to the Western Hockey League’s championsh­ip series.

In Game 6 of the WHL Eastern Conference final on Sunday in Moose Jaw, the Warriors won 4-3 in overtime — with Lynden Lakovic scoring the OT winner — to force a seventh and deciding game, which will be played Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Sasktel Centre in Saskatoon. In the series, five of the six games so far have gone to overtime.

The winner will advance to the league final where they will meet either the Portland Winterhawk­s or Prince George Cougars who are battling in the Western Conference final.

IIHF U18 WORLD CHAMPIONSH­IP

Team Canada is coming home with gold from the 2024 IIHF U18 World Championsh­ip.

The Canadians defeated the United States 6-4 on Sunday in Finland to claim their first gold medal since 2021. Whitewood product Reese Hamilton was part of the winning squad as he played in two of Canada’s seven games throughout the tournament.

IIHF WORLD HOCKEY CHAMPIONSH­IP

Hockey Canada unveiled the 22 players who will be wearing the Maple Leaf at the upcoming IIHF World Championsh­ip, set for May 10 to 26 in Czechia.

Former Regina Pats forward Connor Bedard and former Swift Current Broncos goalie Joel Hofer will be on Canada’s squad alongside Melville product Damon Severson, who spent this past season with the NHL’S Columbus Blue Jackets.

Severson scored a goal in Canada’s first pre-tournament game — a 5-1 win over Austria — on Sunday.

Canada will play another pre-tournament game on Tuesday against Hungary before opening the tournament on Saturday against Great Britain.

SHSAA REGIONAL BADMINTON

Regina athletes swept all five gold medals at the recent Saskatchew­an High Schools Athletic Associatio­n’s regional badminton championsh­ips in Wilcox.

Campbell’s Jenny Chen won the girls singles title while Luther’s Sebastian Callo won the boys championsh­ip.

Leboldus duo Sofia Francisco and Claire Tacsay won the girls doubles title while Mathew Takach and Kieran Curtis, also of Leboldus, won the boys doubles title. O’neill’s Nantas Eng and Bianca Quangtakou­ne won the mixed doubles championsh­ip.

Along with the winners, O’neill pair Rose Poligrates and Kim Jupiter and Campbell’s Daniel Xu and Jackson Lai have also earned spots at the provincial championsh­ips which are set for Saturday in Nipawin.

WATER POLO 15U

Both of Team Saskatchew­an’s water polo squads are coming home with silver medals from the 15U Western National Championsh­ips on the weekend.

The boys’ and girls’ teams made it to the gold medal finals, but the boys lost to Fraser Valley and the girls to the Calgary Renegades.

Clara Milleker Shyiak and Lucia Dorgigne were named all-stars on the girls’ side while Jesse Anderson and Max Rodriguez were named all stars on the boys’ side.

REGINA RAMS

The University of Regina Rams have unveiled their 2024 Canada West football schedule.

The Rams will hit the field for camp on Aug. 10 before playing an exhibition game on Aug. 22 at Mosaic Stadium against the Manitoba Bisons.

Regina will then begin conference play on Aug. 30 in Calgary before hosting the Saskatchew­an Huskies in Week 2 on Sept. 6. The Rams will be at home the following weekend as well, hosting UBC on Sept. 14.

The regular season concludes on Oct. 25 with a home game against Alberta before the playoffs begin on Nov. 2. The 2024 Vanier Cup is set for Nov. 23 in Kingston, Ont.

In November, it was announced Regina will host the 2025 Vanier Cup.
