Man arrested for attempted carjacking at Hillcrest
Investigators with the York Regional Police have arrested and charged a 58-year-old Richmond Hill male accused following an armed robbery in the parking lot of the Hillcrest Mall on July 19.
At approximately 4 p.m., a female victim was on her way to her car after leaving a bank at the mall. She was approached by the accused, who was holding a large kitchen knife. He ordered the victim into the back seat of her vehicle. The victim complied at first and entered her vehicle. As the accused entered the vehicle, she ran from the back seat, leaving the accused in the driver’s seat.
The accused stole the victim’s purse, which included her house and car keys and a wallet with identification. He fled on foot before police were called to the scene.
Four days later, the suspect entered the apartment building using the victim’s keys. He was armed with a large knife. Police were called to the scene and arrested the accused without incident. He has been charged with robbery, forcible confinement, possession of a weapon, two counts of carrying a concealed weapon and possession of property obtained by crime.
