While teach­ing at the Univer­sity of Toronto was in­spir­ing, Dr. David Rei­betanz felt as if the per­sonal con­nec­tions and real con­ver­sa­tions were miss­ing. It was only when he started teach­ing high school that he re­ally felt at home.

Dr. Rei­betanz has been with Blyth Academy Yorkville for two years and has de­vel­oped many English and French cour­ses, as well as aid­ing in the cre­ation of two new lit­er­a­ture cour­ses.

Each class starts with med­i­ta­tion for the stu­dents, be­fore be­gin­ning deep in­quiry, dis­cus­sion and re­flec­tion on the stud­ied texts that range from the clas­sic Oedi­pus Rex to pop­u­lar cul­ture pieces such as In­cep­tion.

Dr. Rei­betanz be­lieves that the abil­ity to con­nect with stu­dents is the most grat­i­fy­ing ex­pe­ri­ence of teach­ing, and that an en­vi­ron­ment where teach­ers and stu­dents have a shared re­spect for one an­other is ex­tremely help­ful in driv­ing stu­dents’ suc­cess. “As a holis­tic ed­u­ca­tor, I am a firm be­liever in cre­at­ing a class­room en­vi­ron­ment that is tension free, so that the stu­dents can chal­lenge them­selves in a pos­i­tive, mind­ful way. I also try to cre­ate a bal­ance between re­lat­ing the lit­er­a­ture I teach to my stu­dents, and lead­ing my stu­dents to ex­tend them­selves into cul­tures and imag­i­na­tive land­scapes that

are for­eign to them.”
