Dr. David Reibetanz
ENGLISH & FRENCH TEACHER
While teaching at the University of Toronto was inspiring, Dr. David Reibetanz felt as if the personal connections and real conversations were missing. It was only when he started teaching high school that he really felt at home.
Dr. Reibetanz has been with Blyth Academy Yorkville for two years and has developed many English and French courses, as well as aiding in the creation of two new literature courses.
Each class starts with meditation for the students, before beginning deep inquiry, discussion and reflection on the studied texts that range from the classic Oedipus Rex to popular culture pieces such as Inception.
Dr. Reibetanz believes that the ability to connect with students is the most gratifying experience of teaching, and that an environment where teachers and students have a shared respect for one another is extremely helpful in driving students’ success. “As a holistic educator, I am a firm believer in creating a classroom environment that is tension free, so that the students can challenge themselves in a positive, mindful way. I also try to create a balance between relating the literature I teach to my students, and leading my students to extend themselves into cultures and imaginative landscapes that
are foreign to them.”
