Ap­prox­i­ately 35,000 peo­ple in Rich­mond Hill were no­ti­fied that dur­ing 10 days in Oc­to­ber, their per­sonal con­tact in­for­ma­tion was ex­posed on­line through the Town of Rich­mond Hill’s con­tact cen­tre. Staff be­came aware of the breach when a search turned up the searcher’s name on­line and the ad­dress, phone num­ber and email ad­dress were also found on the town’s data­base. More calls came in, with one won­der­ing why Timmy down the street kept ring­ing up to ask if their re­frig­er­a­tor was run­ning. Re­frig­er­a­tors are fast, but the town was faster: the er­ror was re­solved in a mat­ter of days.
