Richmond Hill Post - - News -

Robbery violations reported in York Region increased to 357 violations in 2017, from 276 violations in 2016. The breakdown of robberies includes street robberies, retail robberies, home invasions, carjackings, ATM robberies and financial robberies, which encompasses bank robberies. Although financial robberies only make up 1.4 per cent of robbery violations, there were many occurrences in York Region.

In January, a male suspect attempted to rob a bank in Markham at Steeles Avenue East and Woodbine Avenue. The suspect demanded cash but exited the bank before he received any money.

In February, two male suspects entered a bank near Highway 404 and Steeles Avenue East wearing gloves and bandanas over their faces. The suspects were holding silver-coloured firearms. One suspect jumped over the counter and took cash from the teller area before fleeing.

In March, a male suspect entered a bank near Bayview Avenue and Elgin Mills Road East in Richmond Hill carrying a sawed-off shotgun and demanded cash from the teller. The suspect left with an unknown quantity of cash.

Also in Richmond Hill, a male suspect entered a bank at Highway 7 and Bayview Avenue carrying a firearm. He demanded cash from the teller and left with a quantity of cash.

In May, YRP officers were called to Highway 7 and West Beaver Creek Road following reports of a bank robbery carried out by a lone male suspect with a shotgun.

In Thornhill, a male suspect entered a bank near Bathurst Street and Steeles Avenue West wearing a gorilla mask and carrying a handgun. The suspect obtained a quantity of cash and left the bank.
