Prescribed Burn

“Each year I hoped they’d keep, knew they would not”

—Seamus Heaney

The chickadees are cavity nesters. The female selects a site to excavate and build her cup-shaped nest.

Their calls are complex, with extra dees to indicate extra danger.

When you replace your neurons each year for adaptation, what makes you choose again and again

to enter into a family? To make a safe space to live together? That it is worth the risk?

Like dock leaves and nettles, the antidote will grow near the poison

even after it burns and regenerates.
