ART ESCAPE

The event all art and design aficionados should add to their winter agendas.

Life is better on a beach. Even more so when that beach is crawling with creative types, fawning over art. This year marks the 14th edition of Art Basel Miami Beach, which will showcase 267 art galleries from around the globe in December. Galleries from 32 countries will participate in the four-day event, bringing together a diverse range of both established and emerging artists. “The list of participating galleries this year is particularly strong,” says Noah Horowitz, Art Basel’s director of the Americas. Many premier exhibitors reapply each year, which Horowitz sees as a testament to the show’s success. “I am also looking forward to welcoming 29 exhibitors that are completely new to the Miami Beach edition,” he says.

One of the highlights this year is a section titled Nova—which is, as its name suggests, where new galleries will showcase their artists’ work. “[It’s] designed to be more experimental,” explains Horowitz. Case in point: Brazil’s Galeria Leme will transform its booth into a fictitious museum, while curators from the United States’ artist-run gallery 47 Canal will create a display commenting on the compressed sloganeering of the post-digital world. Both must-see exhibitions will give visitors something to think about. Art Basel Miami Beach runs December 3–6, 2015, at various locations, including the Miami Beach Convention Center.
