Outstanding literacy initiatives recognized
Tantramar Family Resource Centre earns Dr. Marilyn Trenholme Counsell Literacy Award
The Tantramar Family Resource Centre (TFRC) was recently recognized by the Literacy Coalition of New Brunswick.
The TFRC was the recipient of the 2018 Dr. Marilyn Trenholme Counsell Literacy Award in the community literacy program category.
Brian Neilson, TFRC president, shared a brief story while accepting the award.
“One day I was in our local post office and noticed a young girl reading aloud the family bills from NB Power and Bell Aliant,” he said. “She was a girl I recognized from our Family Literacy Day event but couldn’t remember her name. I was shocked she would be reading the bills in public and then it hit me. Mom couldn’t read. Mom was illiterate. It is the idea that TFRC’S work and programs can help contribute to ending the cycle of illiteracy in our town that keeps us motivated to do the work we do.”
Neilson and TFRC vice-president Heidi Lafford were on hand for a special ceremony at the Crowne Plaza, Fredericton on Nov. 26, to accept the award.
Neilson said several of the TFRC’S community programs were highlighted during the evening. They included Storytent in the Park during the summer months, Literacy Day celebration the last Friday of January each year, and the Storysacks program.
In accepting the award, Neilson noted what an honour it was for the local organization to be recognized.
“I began by pointing out how humbling it was to be amongst the other award winners and how gratifying it was to receive an award named after Dr. Marilyn Trenholme Counsell who is from Sackville and our part of New Brunswick.”
Neilson went on to thank the TFRC’S donors, noting the local organization operates outside the provincial network of family resource centres.
Neilson added he sat next to New Brunswick Minister of Education Dominic Cardy during the awards ceremony, who expressed interest in coming to Sackville to learn more about the work being done by the TFRC.
The TFRC was nominated for the 2018 Dr. Marilyn Trenholme Counsell Literacy Award by Cheryl Brown from Quality Learning New Brunswick in Saint John.
