Canada in softball playoff
HERMOSILLO, Mexico (CP) — Ian Fehrman and Jeff Ellsworth led the offence Friday as Canada earned the fourth and final playoff berth at the Pan-American men’s softball championship with a 10-0 win over Guatemala.
Fehrman, of Townsend, Ont., was 3-for-4 with three runs batted in as Canada kept its quest for its third straight PanAm gold medal alive. Ellsworth, of Alberton, P.E.I., went 2-for-4 with a two-run double and run scored. Rick Smith of Duncan, B.C., earned the win. Canada faces Argentina in a playoff game today. The United States plays round-robin leader Venezuela the second playoff game, with the winner going to the final. The loser will face the winner of the Canada-Argentina match for another chance to make the final.
Canada (6-3) finished the round-robin in a four-way tie with the U.S., Argentina and Cuba.
