First pelican of year arrives in Saskatoon

This year, the first pelican to touch down on the South Saskatchewan River between the weir and the CP bridge did so on Sunday at about 7:45 p.m., the Meewasin Valley Authority has confirmed.

Official spotters from the Saskatoon Nature Society were on hand to witness the arrival of the American white pelican, which migrates north during springtime from places as far away as California, Florida, Mexico or Guatemala.

This year marked the 14th annual Meewasin pelican watch contest. In the past, the once-endangered birds have arrived anywhere from April 6 to 18. The pelican has been a fixture by the weir since the late 1970s.

The winners of the contest will be announced at a news conference at a later date.
