Hostage flees in Nigeria

LAGOS, Nigeria (AFP) — An Italian national abducted last week in Nigeria has escaped from his captors, a Nigerian government spokesperson said Wednesday.

Giuseppe Canova, a 60-year-old working for a construction company, was abducted on April 6 by gunmen as he travelled to work in Abakaliki, capital of southeastern Ebonyi state.

Canova took advantage of a lucky break to gain his freedom on Tuesday night, said Abia Onyuike, a Nigerian government spokesperson.

“His abductors panicked at the sound of gunshots between the police and some criminals around the place where he was being held and, in the confusion, the man escaped,” Onyuike said.

The Italian foreign ministry in Rome said earlier that Canova had been released.
