Petro-Canada lays off workers

CALGARY (CNS) — Petro-Canada has started laying off up to 200 full-time employees in its oilsands division specifically related to its stalled Fort Hills project, Canwest News Service has learned.

The company, which announced last month it was merging with oilsands giant Suncor Energy Inc., confirmed the layoffs started Tuesday and are expected to continue.

The job cuts also include about 80 contract positions as Petro-Canada proceeds to trim its budget around a project that has been in the cooler since last November.

“Looking ahead, there’s going to be less and less work and we’re in a situation where, unfortunately, we have more people than we have work,” said PetroCanada spokesperson Kelli Stevens.
