Delorme’s putter packs heat for sizzling 67

- DARREN ZARY

“THIS IS WHERE I WANTED TO BE, COMING INTO THE LAST DAY.” CADMUS DELORME

Maybe the blazing sun had something to do with it.

Cadmus Delorme’s putter was smoking.

No need for a head cover. That may cool it off.

“Putter was red-hot,” Delorme admitted with a smile after sinking six birdie putts through his opening 10 holes on his way to a sizzling 67 score Tuesday afternoon at the Willows Golf and Country Club.

“It was hot as the day was today.”

You could have fried an egg on Delorme’s flat stick. It was that hot during the second round of the 2012 Saskatchewan Mid-Amateur men’s golf championship.

“I hit a lot of shots where I did not want to hit them, but my up and downs were good,” the defending champion said. “I thank my putter for today. All my practicing paid off for the putter.”

It paid off as Delorme vaulted atop the leaderboard, jumping from third to first place with one round to play. At 7-under, he is one up on first-round leader Tyler Frank, who shot a 1-under 71 Tuesday. Frank is 6-under for the tournament.

“This is where I wanted to be, coming into the last day,” said Delorme. “I’ve got him right where I want him. I’ve just got to keep it up.”

Delisle’s Colin Coben is third after a 3-under 69 Tuesday. He is 4-under through two days.

Frank carded six birdies, but those were countered by two bogeys and a doublebogey.

“I’m happy with how I’ve played so far,” said Frank. “I didn’t play as solid as I did (Monday), but 6-under is pretty good for two days.”

Frank, 25, playing in his first-ever Mid-Am in his first year of eligibility.

“I’m going to have to play a good round (today), that’s for sure,” he said. “Everybody out here is capable of shooting a good round, so I’ll definitely have to play well to win this thing.”

Regina’s Rick Ledingham (69-73) and Ryan McNall (72-70) are tied for fourth at 2-under. Saskatoon’s Blane Nieman (73-70) and Regina’s Jason Galon (72-71) share sixth spot at 1-under. Brad Phelps of Saskatoon is alone in eighth at 1-over with rounds of 72 and 73.

For Delorme, it was laundry day.

Into his second week away from home, Delorme was left wearing a dark black golf shirt and cap for his golf outing Tuesday under the sweltering heat.

It reached 94 degrees Fahrenheit in the shade of the scoring tent. It had to be 100 degrees out on the course. What was Delorme thinking?

That the putter trumps out laundry, any day.

“I’ve run out of clothes,” Delorme said with a chuckle, happily handing in his colourful scorecard laden with red circles. “I’ve been up here for eight days. I’m running out of options.

“I had all three buttons (of his shirt) down by the first hole.”

Delorme was at the Dunes this past week to play in the Canadian Tour’s Dakota Dunes Casino Open. He didn’t survive the cut but he stayed here for the weekend.

On Tuesday, he had just enough time to maybe take a shower.

After sweating through 18 holes at the Willows, Delorme was last seen racing off to the Dakota Dunes. He had another tee time as an special guest for men’s night on an extended golf day in Saskatoon.

What a day it had been.

YOUNG EXTENDS LEAD

In the Saskatchewan Amateur women’s championship, two-time defending champion Anna Young has extended her lead to seven shots Tuesday.

The University of Tulsa player Young, who carded an even-par 72, is 4-under for the tournament. Behind her is Bradley University team member Thea Hedemann, who also shot 72 Tuesday and is now 3-over for the tournament.

Fellow Saskatoon golfer Kathy Ziglo is third at 6-over after a pair of 75s. Danielle Pinder is fourth at 8-over with a pair of 76s.
