Bautista hurt as Yankees win
NEW YORK — Raul Ibanez hit a tiebreaking grand slam with two outs in the eighth inning and the New York Yankees beat Toronto 6-3 on Monday after Blue Jays slugger Jose Bautista left the game with a wrist injury.
Ibanez connected on a 3-1 pitch from Jason Frasor for a no-doubt drive into the second deck in right field to snap a 2-2 tie.
“I was trying not to do too much, just trying to hit a line drive,” Ibanez said.
Bautista injured his left wrist on a swing in the eighth and was removed from the game. He hit a long foul ball against David Robertson and immediately grabbed his wrist, dropping into a crouch outside the batter’s box.
He walked off the field, gently supporting the wrist with his right hand after being attended to by several Toronto staff members. No further details on the injury were immediately available.
The blast off Frasor, the 40-year-old Ibanez’s 10th career grand slam, gave him 12 homers this season. Eight of them have come in the sixth inning or later.
The Jays scored a run charged to Cody Eppley in the ninth, but with the tying run at the plate, Rafael Soriano struck out Colby Rasmus looking to earn his 22nd save in 23 opportunities.
With one out in the eighth and lefty Aaron Loup pitching, Alex Rodriguez delivered his second hit of the night, a sharp single to left, and advanced to second on a passed ball. Robinson Cano, who already had extended his hitting streak to a careerbest 19 games with an RBI double in the third, reached on an infield single to put runners at the corners.
Phil Hughes, 8- 3 with a 3.46 ERA over his last 12 starts, coming into the game, pitched well in the no-decision. He allowed two runs and four hits in seven innings.
One of the hits was Adam Lind’s eighth home run of the season.
