TEEN HEROES

- EMMA GRANEY THE LEADER-POST

Two Regina teens entered a burning house and pulled an elderly woman to safety.

REGINA — Karli WeissDelorme and her boyfriend, Huey Creely, were walking home from a dental appointment Thursday at the north Regina shopping mall when they saw smoke pouring out of a home.

They stopped and Karli asked Huey if he thought anyone was inside — then they heard an elderly voice crying out for help.

“I pushed him into the house and he grabbed her and ran out again,” the 18-year-old Cochrane High School student recalled Friday.

“When he got out, there was fire everywhere, the whole house was on fire.”

Huey, 19, doesn’t use many words when asked about his role in what probably saved the woman’s life, matter-of-factly saying he “just did it.”

“It was real smoky in there,” he added.

According to the couple, the woman was close to the door when Huey found her, trying to find some shoes so she could get out of the house.

The problem was the large amount of smoke was preventing her from seeing anything at all.

When Huey grabbed her and ran outside she was still without shoes; he held her up off the frozen ground and then he and Karli helped her to the hood of a car, sitting with her until ambulances arrived.

Did Huey expect to be saving lives on his walk home from the dentist?

“No, not really,” he chuckled. “Nothing like that has happened before.”

Karli said she received a multitude of phone calls last night from the woman’s family, thanking her and Huey for what they’d done.

They almost weren’t going to walk by the scene of the fire at all, and Karli said that’s what she and Huey spent the night talking about.

“We were going to catch the bus, but decided to walk,” she said.

“And, you know, what if we’d gone another way? She could have died.”

The woman is instead recovering from smoke inhalation in Pasqua Hospital.
