Victorian returns with steak, seafood
SCOTT LARSON Jeri-Lynn Walton has traded in tramping through the north digging up samples for dishing up fine food.
The geologist turned restaurant owner has opened John’s Victorian Steak & Seafood House.
“We offer atmosphere, service and great food,” said Walton.
The restaurant is in the same location as its predecessor, Victorian Restaurant. That establishment, run by Walton’s parents, had shared a kitchen with the Riviera Restaurant & Lounge. When the Riviera was sold, The Victorian closed.
When Walton had the chance to get involved with the new venture she jumped aboard.
Manager Nick Makohon, who has spent many years in the restaurant industry, said the biggest challenge was putting in a brand new kitchen.
They took out one of the private rooms to build the new kitchen, and also renovated the bar and lounge.
Makohon said the staff have a combined experience of more than 200 years in the industry.
The restaurant features steak and seafood, prime rib, lamb and chicken. There will also be feature dishes every month.
And they have private rooms that can accommodate parties from 12-50 people and there is plenty of free parking.
Walton said there was a need for another fine dining establishment.
The restaurant features a pair of fireplaces and she said even when busy you can have an intimate conversation.
“It’s like a big living room,” Makohon added.
The restaurant is open Monday to Saturday beginning at 4:30 p.m.
Reservations are recommended.
The 1 Stop Convenience and Dollar Store has opened on 29th Street.
Owner Irfan Manzoor bought the former store at that location and closed for a month to do extensive renovations before reopening.
“I saw there was an opportunity for this store to do better,” Manzoor said. “So far it is working out.”
The store is divided in two — on one side is the convenience store with fresh baking, drinks, coffee, fireworks and services like key cutting. The other side is the dollar store with a wide range of products.
And Manzoor, who has owned a Husky station and convenience store in Lawson Heights for the past five years, anticipates more and more items being added to the store in the coming months.
He said already owning a business helped him see the potential for the new place.
“I can tell there is an opportunity there.”
The store is open Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.
