Margaret Tosh

Margaret Tosh is a remarkable woman, a master athlete, and one of our nation’s greats. Currently an elite Canadian senior athlete, Margaret Tosh is kknown in Saskatoon’s sporting community for her accomplishments in a multitude of sports, spanning a lifetime. She exemplifies the spirit of the WoWomen of Distinction in her inspiring personal achievements; her influence on the sporting community, coaching generations of young athletes; her cocourageous and competitive spirit, setting goals and breaking records at every age; and her philosophy of fitness, passion, spirituality, and balance. Identified as a young “phenom,” Margaret secured a spot to compete in the Melbourne Olympics in 1956. She set a record in javelin at the Olympic trials—that stood for 10 years in Canada and 20 years in Saskatchewan. Following the Olympics, Margaret went on to raise a family in Harris, Sask. where she was fully engaged in running the farm with her husband. In addition to family and work commitments, she served as an inspiring coach, touching the lives of many young accomplished athletes, leading her teams to win medals in national and international events. At the 1989 Jeux Canada Games held in Saskatoon, she was the only female coach. Following her coaching career of 30 plus years, Margaret “retired,” but did not slow down. At age 68, she competed in the 2005 World Masters Games in Edmonton and won gold, silver and bronze medals. Last summer, at 74, she competed at the World Masters Athletic Championship in California and won silver, three bronze medals, and a fourth and fifth place. Most recently, she has broken the World Records for weight throw and weight pentathlon in her age class. She was also named Sask Sport Master Athlete of the year for 2012. Margaret is a courageous woman who continues to inspire all those around her to set personal goals and live life to the fullest. She is an involved grandmother who enjoys jumping on the trampoline with her grandkids. Margaret is always true to herself, and is not defined by society’s perception of age and ability. She pursues her goals and dreams relentlessly, regardless of obstacles, and intends to live to be 100 and still be competing. Margaret is the definition of a Woman of Distinction.
