Leyda’s has the key to healthy living

-

Food is our first medicine, says Dr. DeeDee Maltman.

The longtime physician is out to treat Saskatoon foodies at her new restaurant, Leyda’s, which features a glutenfree and nut-free menu.

Maltman said the restaurant’s logo is a key, which signifies that we each hold the key to our own nutritional health.

But the food also has to be delicious if you are going to get people in the door, she added.

Menu items include mussel appetizers, trout quesadillas, spaghetti squash casserole, pizza, bison burger sliders, black cod and Leyda’s shaved chicken sandwich (with seared pineapple, coconut mayo topped with arugula).

The Ayurvedic soup consists of carrot, ginger, kale, quinoa and curry. There’s also gluten-free pizzas and signature gluten-free bread (which can be purchased on its own).

Besides following the Weil’s anti-inflammatory food pyramid, Leyda’s locally sources as much of its ingredients as possible and grows all its own herbs.

The restaurant is named after Maltman’s youngest child, Tasha Leyda (Leyda being a combination of her grandparent’s names).

“We’d go out to dinner and we used to say, ‘Maybe one day we’ll open a restaurant,’” Maltman said.

Now it has become a reality.

“The restaurant is a huge collaboration of people,” Maltman said, including head chef Miguel De Lucas Sintes.

Other unique features of the restaurant include having water that has run through a reverse osmosis filtration system, providing yoga space for the staff, and offering cooking and educational classes.

Leyda’s does not have a deep fryer and does not use non-stick chemical-lined pans.

Maltman said one of the best compliments she has received is when a customer told her “they felt love in their food.”

Leyda’s is open Tuesday to Saturday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Saskatoon Salsa Dance Co. has found a home of its own on Duchess Street.

“I’ve never had my own space,” said owner Kimberly Parent.

It has six-week recreational classes and performancebased classes. Most classes are in the evenings and Saturdays.

On Oct. 12 the school is bringing in a Latin band from Edmonton, Salsabor, and will offer workshops.

Parent, who always has had a passion for dance, joined a Latin dance group at 18 and

SASKATOON SALSA DANCE CO. said she immediately knew she had found her calling.

“When I heard Cuban music it changed my life,” she said. “It is so rich and complex.”

Back then there was little salsa going on in the city.

Now there is a thriving community, she said. “It is a lifestyle for a lot of people.”

Parent travels often to Cuba to train and dance, including this November when she will take a number of students from the school to train in Havana.

Groups from the school perform all year and can be booked for private, corporate, community and public events.
