Forty pythons removed from motel room in Ontario

-

BRANTFORD, Ont. — Some 40 unwanted guests have been removed from a motel in southwestern Ontario — all of them snakes.

Police say the reptiles — pythons ranging in length from 30 centimetres to 1.4 metres — were found in plastic storage bins in a motel room in Brantford, Ont. A manager at the Bell City Motel says the snakes belonged to a local couple who had stayed for only one night.

He says they had been evicted by their landlord, who also called the local police to inform them they had taken the snakes to the motel.

The manager says the couple were out for dinner Thursday evening when police arrived.

Police say the pythons are now in the custody of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals in Brant County.

“The snakes were not being suitably cared for and were in distress,” police said Friday.

The snakes were taken to a veterinarian and are expected to be fine.
