We Day returns to CUC

F ree the Children and PotashCorp are bringing We Day back to Credit Union Centre, Nov. 6. We Day Saskatchew­an is one of ten stops in Canada. The one-day event, hosted by Free the Children, is a celebratio­n of a program called We Act which engages youth with local and global charities.

The aim is to entertain and inspire up to 15,000 students and educators from across Saskatchew­an. Tickets toWe Day are earned through hours of volunteer service.

This year’s event at CUC will include appearance­s by NBA legend Magic Johnson; human rights advocate Martin Luther King III (also the eldest son of Martin Luther King, Jr); JUNO-award winner Shawn Desman; artist Tyler Shaw; Canadian rockers Neverst; singer-songwriter Kay; AFN Chief Shawn Atleo; Spencer West, author and double amputee who climbed Mt. Kilimanjar­o; Donisha Prendergas­t, granddaugh­ter of Bob Marley.

There are 425 schools in Saskatchew­an registered for the We Act program. The program runs a number of campaigns including We Are Change, which collects coins to help build a school in Africa, We Scare Hunger, which collects food bank donations instead of candy at Halloween, and We Are Silent, which challenges students to remain silent for up to 24 hours to stand up against bullying.

Last year We Day youth completed 9.6 million volunteer hours and raised $37 million for various causes.
