Service front and centre at Dennis’ Tire
Dennis Asselin’s new business is starting to gain traction.
After 30 years in the tire business, Asselin has opened his own shop, Dennis’ Tire Centre located on Millar Avenue.
After taking a little time off Asselin was considering his next venture when friends and family told him to do what he does best. And that’s tires, he said. His smaller shop means customers will deal directly with Asselin.
The shop performs all types of tire work — sales, installation, balancing and repairs.
And he does everything from passenger, light truck, performance, skid steer, fork lift, small farm tires and after-market wheels.

He also does tire siping, which involves cutting small slits into the tread on the tire.
Asselin said the process provides better grip, a longer life, a better ride, adding he suggests going to sipers.com to learn more about it.
Appointments are preferred, but not necessary.
Asselin said service and expertise is front and centre. As well, he has access to almost all brands of tires and purchases everything locally.
“I take pride in what I do,” he said, adding most of the time he can bring in specific tires that day.
“You can come in and be out in an hour,” he said.
Dennis’ Tire Centre is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Friday.

Ruth Doell is the new owner of the Grandma Lee’s franchise located on 51st Street East.
“This is me,” Doell said. “I have been baking and cooking for more than 24 years.”
Doell had first looked at purchasing the franchise a few years ago, but the previous owner decided not to sell.
Three years later, she looked into the business again and this time was able to secure the franchise.
Doell said she was looking for something she enjoyed that didn’t feel like work, and cooking is a passion for her.
Breakfast include items such as ham and egg on a bun or Grandma Lee’s famous three-quarter inch toast and coffee.
Lunch offers sandwiches with a choice of seven different kinds of bread made fresh daily, specialty soups, cupcakes, puff wheat squares and cinnamon buns.
They do a lot of catering for businesses, she said, adding the service is available for pickup or delivery. She asks catering orders be made by 3 p.m. the day before.
Doell has also been making cakes for many years, including wedding cakes, and customers will be able to order those too.
“This is a whole new venture,” said Doell, who previous owned a cleaning business. “It has been a big learning curve, but I’m feeling a lot more comfortable.
“We had a really good January.”
Grandma Lee’s is open from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday to Friday.
