Jacobs finding his mojo, baby

- ED WILLES

L ike Austin Powers, Brad Jacobs was having a hard time finding his mojo. He seemed to relocate it on Friday, baby.

Brad Jacobs and crew, who stumbled out of the gate at the Olympic curling bonspiel, recorded their third straight win, thumping Norway 10-4 to improve their record to 4-2. They were to play Britain in Saturday’s afternoon draw in Sochi.

For the Canadians, the larger development was the manner in which they dispatched the Scandinavians. In the seventh end, Jacobs made a precise tap back for four, breaking open a 3-3 tie against 2010 silver medallist Thomas Ulsrud and, for the first time in Sochi, let out a roar that announced his presence in the ferocious men’s competition.

“That’s who we are,” said Jacobs. “That’s our team identity. When we play with emotion, we’re a better team.”

For Jacobs and his rink form Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., business as usual is winning. After three games in the Olympic draw, however, they were 1-2 and looking at a long, hard climb to get back in the men’s side.

They responded with three straight wins to get back in the mix.

Canada closes its qualification schedule Sunday against the U.S. and China.

“We had a rough start here,” Jacobs said. “We knew what we had to do and we’ve done a really good job of that.”
