Jason Harry Heaton has had standoffs with the Saskatoon Police Service more than once.

On Wednesday, the 27-yearold pleaded guilty in Saskatoon provincial court to some of the charges stemming from his most recent incident on Oct. 2, 2013, and was sentenced to five and a half months, time served.

The incident began when police attempted a traffic stop, but the driver sped away. Later that day, police believed they located the suspects in a home in the 400 block of Third Avenue North. Members of the Emergency Response Team and crisis negotiators attended the scene.

After about seven hours, the suspects, including Heaton, came out of the home. He faced eight drug and firearm charges relating to weapons and drugs found in the home, and three breach charges.

Most of the charges were stayed on Wednesday, after Heaton pleaded guilty to breaching his recognizance by failing to keep the peace and failing to abstain from alcohol and drugs, as well as some other breach and drug possession charges.

The driver of the car, 20-year-old Kaitlyn Nicole Daniels, pleaded guilty in October to dangerous driving and evading police. She was sentenced to 45 days in jail.

It’s his crystal meth addiction that gets Heaton into trouble, defence lawyer Chris Lavier said. Prior to the October incident, Heaton “had a good plan” to stay clean, but he started using it again, Lavier told court. “It has been a struggle for him.” Heaton’s record includes two charges of breaching his probation in connection with a six-hour standoff on March 22, 2012 at an apartment complex at 33rd Street and Avenue W. He was sentenced to five months in May 2012 on the breach charges, with the plan that he would seek addictions treatment after his release.

The Crown and defence jointly submitted the sentence on the new charges, which Judge Marilyn Gray accepted.
