Moose, road grader, pedestrian struck on Sask. highways

Five people are dead after a series of fatal highway collisions in Saskatchew­an over the long weekend.

On Friday night, 23-yearold Jennifer Norman of Foam Lake was killed after her Honda Civic collided with a moose on Highway 35, about seven kilometres south of the community of Bankend. RCMP found her in her car, which was submerged in water on the side of the highway. Norman was the lone occupant of the vehicle.

Three died Saturday after a pickup truck carrying six passengers rear-ended a road grader five kilometres south of Punnichy. Two passengers, a 37-year-old man from Sandy Bay and a 47-year-old man from Gordon’s First Nation, were killed on scene while a 30-year-old woman from Gordon’s First Nation succumbed to injuries en route to the hospital.

The driver of the vehicle and the two remaining passengers, all from Gordon’s First Nation, were being treated at a Regina hospital Saturday night. The male operator of the road grader suffered minor injuries. The cause of the collision is being investigat­ed and charges related to the accident are pending.

Late Sunday, a pedestrian was struck and killed on Highway 11 near the weigh scales between Regina and Lumsden. According to witnesses, the 19-year-old woman was walking in the middle of the highway. The identity of the pedestrian is not being released at the request of the family. The driver who struck the woman remained on the scene. The incident is under investigat­ion by the RCMP.
