THEY SAID IT

The SP’s Don Rice was on the scene at the Bridge City Boogie to get reactions from the participants:

-

Laureen Millette, Saskatoon, 10K event

“I’ve done it every year for the eight years. I think it’s because it’s for everybody — it doesn’t matter who you are or what you can do, it’s just to get out here and try and to enjoy it. And it’s very upbeat and fun.”

Monique Lalonde, Saskatoon, 10K event

“This is my second time doing the Boogie and first time doing the 10K. It was awesome. I wasn’t sure if I could do it at first. I really wasn’t. I thought I was going to be out for two-and-a-half hours. We’re actually part of the Saskatoon blind ski group — we’re a cross country group that goes out in wintertime.”

John Homer, Saskatoon, 5K event

“I feel like I need to do more running so I thought this would be a good way to get some exercise. Seeing all of these people here as well is really good … I really enjoyed it and I’m looking forward to doing it next year and the years after.”

James Funk, Saskatoon, 10K event

“As a teacher and parent I’m always encouraging kids and people to be active. Even if it rains on you sometimes it’s still a good time. I think that enjoyment of the activity really speaks for itself — that’s what we all need. It is really one of the things that we probably need more than anything else in terms of helping us to be healthy by being active.”

Xavier Gardipy, Duck Lake, 10K event

“I wanted to come last year but I slept in. This year I was on time. It was really friendly here. People motivated you when you wanted to stop running. I liked it and I want to come back next year.”

Jacob Murphy, Saskatoon, 5K event

“I thought it would be fun to compete in this and that I could challenge myself to go under 20 minutes. I got 20:48. I like the entertainment they had along the race — it really helped. They had bands and dancers.”

Ella, Stan, Lydia and Westin Kotelko, Martensville, 5K event

“This is our third time (doing the Boogie) and first time for the kids and (they) left us behind! (We came out for) exercise and a good charity cause.”

Isaiah Bautista, Martensville, 10K event

“I’ve done (the Boogie) twice before. I did the 2K first and the 5K the second time and now I’m doing the 10K. I’ve been working up to it. I’ll eventually do the half marathon and then marathon hopefully in the next year or so. My dad pushes me to keep fit.”

Mike Todd, Clavet, 10K event

“This is my first time doing the Boogie. I don’t normally run but (I got involved with) a group through work. It’s a nice course too.”

Kathy & Clay Brander, Saskatoon, 10K event

“Last year we did 5K (and) we all talked about doing 10K because five was over too fast. This was much nicer because we got out on the trail.”

Andrew Ngyuen, Saskatoon, 10K event

“It’s actually my first time doing a (10K) run. I thought it would be fun to actually join in with the community.”

Graham Knox, Vegreville, Alta., 5K event

“I used to work for a company in Saskatoon and they did (the Boogie) every year. I’ve moved to Alberta now, but I came back to do it with the same team. It’s a good atmosphere. I drove up last night and I’ve got to go all the way back down to Alberta this afternoon. I’ll be crawling out of the car a wreck tonight.”

Peter Homer, Saskatoon, 5K event

“It was just a little bit cold at the start, just waiting for it. But when I got going it was a lot better and my blood got pumping. I enjoyed it a lot.”

Kathy & Shauna Taylor (mother-daughter duo), 10K

event

“We’ve done the (Boogie) the past four years. I run, she walks and I try to meet her a ways (before) the finish and run her in and finish strong,” said Shauna. “I ran a personal record in the 10K so I was really happy with that.” Kathy added, “It’s fun and there’s lots of people out and lots of energy and the spirit is amazing.”

Rathan Dhariwal, Saskatoon, 10K event

“I said if I can make it 5K (last year), I should be able to make 10K (this year). So that was my challenge and I made it so I’m feeling great now.”

Vaughn Gillis, Martensville, 10K event

“Last year I decided to start to get myself in shape. Last year I went through a lot of personal stress and then this year I needed something for drive to keep going. I just came out and had to do something and I brought my kids and family.”

Shirley Larocque, Saskatoon, 5K event

“This was my first 5K. I’m just glad that it was raining. It kept us cool. I went with my staff, and they all waited for me at the finish line because I was a little bit later than they were.”

Natalia & Jim Stinn, Saskatoon, 10K event

“I thought I got to get in shape and (Jim is) a pretty sedentary accountant so (I told him) ‘I’m enrolling you!’ He didn’t have a choice.” Jim added, “I got the email telling me I was in it.”

Nichole & Masen Gillis, Martensville, 10K event

“It was long, but we did it. The rain was a challenge but it kept us cool. It was a good cause, exercise and it’s finally summer-ish. The finish line was the best part.”
