REGINA — RCMP have confirmed that the remains found on the Muskowekwan First Nation earlier this week are human.

“The next step is to have an autopsy done to hopefully assist us in determining cause of death as well as confirmation of identity,” said RCMP spokesman Sgt. Craig Cleary. “There actually has been a couple of individuals who have gone missing from that particular area.”

A resident of the Muskowekwan First Nation located the remains in a wooded area near his property around 5 p.m. on Tuesday.

Cleary said he hopes the autopsy will be done by week’s end.

“Each situation is unique,” he said. “It depends on the quantity of remains that are found, how recognizable the stages are ... When it comes to determining identity, if there are dental records or some kind of identifying mark, then that makes it a little bit easier. However ... that may not be an option. Then they will have to pursue other avenues, such as DNA comparisons, which can take an extended period of time.”

Cody Ridge Wolfe, 15, was last seen around 10:30 p.m. on April 29, 2011 at his grandmother’s house on the First Nation, on his way to a friend’s house. Wolfe was walking on a road that had been flooded. From some of the last text messages he sent on his dying cellphone, it appeared he was trying to make his way around the washed out road, north of Lestock.

His texts stopped just after midnight on a cold, windy night. Those last messages suggested he was having difficulty finding the house. His family believes he lost his way.

Numerous air, ground and water searches have failed to locate Wolfe.

Most recently, Fenton Blair Albert from Muskowekwan was reported missing by his family on April 7. The 32-year-old was last seen at Carmichael Outreach in Regina on April 6.

Cleary said the RCMP will have more answers once the autopsy is completed. He said neither Wolfe nor Albert has been located, but added the remains could be those of another person. He said investigators were at the scene on Thursday.

No one from Muskowekwan was available for comment.
