Drowning facts:

Majority of drowning victims are male; 13 per cent of whom are between the ages of 20 and 24 with a death rate of 3.4 per 100,000 — 70 per cent higher than the national average for that age group.

Fatality rate for Saskatch- ewan children 14 years and under is 1.9, which is 2.4 times that of the national population. ■ 52 per cent of drownings happen in lakes, 18 per cent in rivers or streams, eight per cent in ditches or culverts, six per cent in bathtubs and four per cent in pools. ■ Most drownings between 2007 and 2011 occurred in the warmer months — January (three per cent), February and March (two per cent), April (11 per cent), May (seven per cent), June (17 per cent), July (15 per cent), August (21 per cent), September (six per cent), October (eight per cent), November (six per cent) and December (two per cent). ■ Fifty-five per cent of all water-related fatalities occur on weekends. ■ Activities before drownings: Swimming 31 per cent, fishing 18 per cent, activity near water 12 per cent, power boating 12 per cent, ATV or snowmobili­ng nine per cent, canoeing six per cent, diving or jumping six per cent.
