The field for the 2014 Saskatchewan Amateur men’s golf championship is loaded.

Among past champions in the mix is reigning champion David Stewart, who also won in 2008. St. Walburg’s Scott Thompson, who won back-to-back titles in 2009 and 2010, is back playing competitive golf after taking an extended break.

The home-course advantage will be prevalent this week when golfers tee up at the Prince Albert Cooke Municipal Golf Club.

Saskatchewan- raised Torrie Coghlin, who won the Alabama mid-amateur championship last summer, will be back in his home province.

There’s a whole whack of P.A. golfers who will figure in the mix. Among the many are Ashley Ziegeman, Brett Henry, Danny Klughart, Cam Bergen, Travis Jenkins, Justin Paradis, Martin Ring, Cory Selander, Cory Sawchuk and Ron Stewart.

Other top names to watch for this week include Taylor Afseth of Saskatoon, Jordan Arndt of Furdale, Leighton Bearchell of Moose Jaw, Garrett Blair of Lanigan, Kris Carley of Carnduff, Colin Coben of Delisle, Liam Courtney of Saskatoon, Michael Herperger of Humboldt, Mitchell Matichuk of Melville, Brad Phelps of Saskatoon, Jehremy Ryde of Swift Current, Greg Swenson of Saskatoon, Chris Tupper of Meadow Lake, Daegan Wall of Regina, Tanner White of Regina, Justin Wood of Unity, Tyler Wright of Regina and Tyler Zaba of Regina.

Shaunavon’s Corey Bailey, who won the Saskatchewan junior boys’ championship this past week, is another young gun looking to make his mark. He’ll be joined by runner-up Roman Timmerman from Saskatoon, Selander and Kade Johnson from Yorkton.

The 72-hole competition begins Monday with the first round. The field will be cut down after three rounds to the top-36 golfers and ties for Thursday’s final round.

Prince Albert Cooke held the 2009 Canadian Mid-Amateur men’s golf championship. It last played host to the Saskatchewan Amateur in 2007 when Prince Albert’s Ron Stewart won.
