A litre of gas in Saskatoon is edging ever closer to dipping below 90 cents.

Costco’s gas station on Marquis Drive was selling a litre of gas for 91.4 cents Tuesday, for members only, while a number of other stations were priced at 94.9 cents per litre, according to gasbuddy.com.

In Saskatchewan’s capital, gas was going for 88.9 cents per litre at Regina Messenger on Tuesday afternoon, while down the road at Regina Cabs, 89.9 cents per litre was the going price, according to gasbuddy.com. And in Kamsack, about 80 km northeast of Yorkton, gasoline was selling for 86.9 cents a litre — the lowest price in the province — thanks to a price war between a newly opened Petro-Canada station and the local Co-op.

With pump prices falling almost daily, it’s hard for consumers to keep track of which stations are offering the lowest prices. Gasbuddy. com, co-founded by Jason Toews of Regina in 2000, is the grandaddy of gas price websites, utilizing a squadron of mobile volunteers to post prices on the website.

But in late September, the Canadian Automobile Association (CAA) launched its own website — getgasprices.ca — and like gasbuddy.com you can use the app to find cheap gas, whether you’re at home or on the road, according to Christine Niemczyk, director of communications for CAA Saskatchewan.

While the website shows the average gas prices for more than 100 Canadian cities, as well as all 10 provinces and the country, CAA’s free software application allows motorists to check out prices at thousands of individual stations across the country.

“This time of year, a lot of people are doing extra travelling … and not just in the province. That’s another (advantage) of the free app and website is that if you’re travelling from one province to another ... you can plan your trip accordingly, check out the gas stations and their prices.”

The app will also help motorists find the station address and phone number, Niemczyk added.

According to CAA, two-day average prices ranged from a high of $1.14 per litre in Newfoundland and Labrador, P.E.I. and B.C. to 94 cents per litre in Alberta and 98 cents in Manitoba on Tuesday.

Gasoline prices are expected to remain relatively low well into the new year.

According to Ian Jack, managing director of communications for CAA in Ottawa “for the next quarter ... we’ll continue to see prices this low, maybe a little bit lower. We’re not sure what the spring will bring.”
