How to serenade your sweetie

What would Valentine’s Day be without some tunes to set the mood? We asked local musician Anna Haverstock, who also books shows at the Capitol, to come up with a can’t miss playlist. Here are her picks:

My Love For You is Real by Ryan Adams

Adams is such a phenomenal songwriter, it was honestly hard to pick just one. This song has a special place in my heart though, because my sister and her husband chose it as their first dance at their wedding. It’s a truly gorgeous tune that warms the heart. I have seen Ryan in concert three times now and always leave with a huge smile on my face — and a few new concert T-shirts.

Crazy For You by Best Coast

This song is pretty much the best, and sums up love in under two minutes of fun California rock. It talks about the ups and downs of love and while some may say these rhymes are cliche, I say they are simply perfect. “I want to hit you but then I kiss you, want to kill you but then I’d miss you.” Can’t we all relate? I love the humour in it. Also, fun fact — this song consists of only two chords. Quick, whip out your guitar and jam out to some Best Coast!

A Case of You by Joni Mitchell

Mitchell is such a legend and musical genius. Who doesn’t look up to her musically? This is one of the most beautiful love songs ever written. “I could drink a case of you, and I’d still be on my feet” is lyricism at its finest. My mother is the biggest fan I know, so I credit her for my love of Mitchell.

Headbanger by King Tuff

King Tuff ’s new album, Black Moon Spell, is full of so many great songs, but this one happens to be a sweet rock ’n’ roll love jam. It’s about having a connection with someone musically and romantically. What more could a huge music fan really ask for? Crank this tune to 11 with your significant other, and don’t forget to wear your matching leather jackets.

Our Day Will Come by Amy Winehouse

Amy Winehouse will always be one of my all-time favourites. A gifted songwriter, and amazing vocalist, Winehouse makes this classic cover her own (it was originally a hit in the ’60s). It’s a hopeful love song that can make anyone swoon. This one is a must on any Valentine’s Day playlist. Impress your date with this tune, and a glass of wine.
