MacCaull makes diabolical big-screen entrance

- BOB THOMPSON

Montreal-born actor Matthew MacCaull sometimes splits his time between Los Angeles and Vancouver, but he didn’t mind extending his stay on the Canadian West Coast in the fall of 2013. It was job related.

The 37-year-old portrayed the mysterious enforcer Dave Clark in the Disney scifi adventure Tomorrowland, which filmed in and around Vancouver.

“What was going on in my head when I got the job was, ‘If I do this right, it could be an iconic Disney character, so don’t screw it up,’” said MacCaull in Toronto recently, promoting the movie.

Based on preview reactions, MacCaull didn’t — especially when he first shows up in the film as Clark, flashing a diabolical grin. “Dave Clark had some help with that smile,” noted the actor. “I don’t look that creepy in real life.”

He was thrilled, though, to be working on the big studio production with George Clooney leading the way as the head collaborator who maintained a positive on-set tone.

“I’ve worked on some shows where the cast and crew are just collecting pay cheques, but everybody was so excited and proud to be on this one,” he said of Tomorrowland. Principal photography of the Brad Bird-directed film began in Vancouver by late August of 2013 and eventually included locations at the University of British Columbia, H. R. MacMillan Space Centre, Museum of Vancouver and the Vancouver Academy of Music.

Scenes from the special effects production were shot in the B.C. municipalities of Armstrong, Richmond, Surrey, Burnaby, Delta and Langley.

“And my exterior was shot just outside of Vernon in a rural town called Enderby,” said MacCaull.

Meanwhile, the actor might be hanging around Vancouver this summer, moonlighting again as a lifeguard at one of the city’s 13 beaches. However, there is a chance MacCaull might reprise his Sebastian role in the second season of The CW’s television series iZombie, filmed in Vancouver. But he’s not sure what the future holds.

“It’s one of those (secretive) productions where you don’t get the script until a few days before,” MacCaull said.
