A man and a male youth have been charged by the RCMP for allegedly causing distress to a kitten at the Craven Country Jamboree over the weekend. The alleged offence includes causing injury.

The youth cannot be named under provisions of the Youth Criminal Justice Act. In a media release, on Monday, the RCMP stated the adult’s name will not be released because “the accused must be given the same consideration for a fair court process as anyone else.” The two males are slated to appear in court in Regina on Sept. 19.

The two individuals are alleged to have poured alcohol on the feline and set it on fire, on Saturday.

Concerned Craven attendees alerted RCMP about the situation, and one of the males was removed from the premises.

TM’z Veterinary Clinic continues to care for the animal — affectionately named Jamboree by staff — and declined to comment further about the situation, on Monday.

According to the vet’s Facebook page, the kitten is still “comfortable” and in stable condition, but is not currently up for adoption.

After a Craven organizer said the incident was “blown out of proportion,” TM’z expressed dissatisfaction toward media coverage.

“We at TM’z are also disappointed in some of the media reports that are attempting to create dissension, or the perception of ill will among the organizers of the Craven Country Jamboree and TM’z Veterinary clinic.”

TM’z asked residents to remember organizers did not commit the offence. “The focus is on treatment of both the physical and mental injuries sustained” by the kitten.

After wrapping up CCJ’s last day, a total of 114 on-site calls for service were made to RCMP — in comparison to 149, in 2015.
