Huskies hold off Cougars to advance to CW hockey semis

The University of Saskatchewan Huskies women’s hockey team defeated their provincial rivals, the University of Regina Cougars, in a pair of close games on the weekend, winning their best-of-three games Canada West quarter-finals series 2-0 in front of a hometown crowd.

Fourth-year forward Kaitlin Willoughby had four goals between the two games, including a hat trick in the 4-3 win on Friday night and the game winner in the 2-1 victory on Saturday.

Saskatchewan will travel to UBC next weekend for a meeting with the No. 1 Thunderbirds in the CW semifinals.

Meanwhile, the No. 1 Saskatchewan men’s team will get their first playoff action next weekend when they host the No. 4 Mount Royal University Cougars in the CW semifinals.

VOLLEYBALL

With only one weekend left in the CW regular season, the Saskatchewan women’s team has officially been eliminated from playoff contention after losing both their matches against host MRU in straight sets on the weekend.

The men’s team, however — despite losing their matches to MRU 3-2 and 3-0 — still has an opportunity to make the playoffs, but must win at least one of their two final regular season matches against Thompson Rivers University next weekend to have a chance.

BASKETBALL

Neither team saw action this weekend, but both will be on hosting duty next weekend for the bestof-three CW quarter-finals.

The fifth-ranked women’s team will host the No. 8 University of Fraser Valley, while the No. 3 men’s team will be visited by the No. 7 University of Winnipeg. Postmedia News
