Shiverettes rock feminist agenda
The Shiverettes
When: April 21
Where: Amigos
What: I just played The Shiverettes’ Dead Man Can’t Cat Call, a truly bad-ass feminist anthem for 2017. It begins with a series of cat sound effects and now my dog is barking at what he perceives to be a nearby feline threat. Little pooch sure hates cat. He seems to like the rest of the song, though. The Calgary four-piece is ready to push its “Feminist Agenda™ with a heavy dose of sass, side eye and shade.” The group’s debut full-length album is named after the previously mentioned song. Plus, awesome Saskatoon band The Garrys and Edmonton’s Power-Buddies open.
Jessica Robinson
When: April 21
Where: The Bassment
What: You may know Saskatoon’s Jessica Robinson for her country music career, but the local singer has versatile tastes. Her latest live show is a tribute to American singer Eva Cassidy, who died in 1996 at age 33. Evening of Eva is meant to honour the musician, who was known for her interpretations of songs like Over the Rainbow and Fields of Gold.
Scott Cook and the Second Chances When: April 24
Where: The Bassment
What: I knew I liked Scott Cook when he signed off an email about his upcoming show with the signature “prairie balladeer, hi-tech hobo.” I’m forced by my company to keep my email signature professional, but if I could be more like Cook I’d write “Saskatoon couch potato, dog park aficionado.” Anyway, Cook is an Edmonton musician whose latest album Further Down the Line brings him back to our neck of the woods after several years. He’ll be joined on stage by his band the Second Chances, so expect a little guitar, upright bass, banjo, mandolin and threepart harmonies. If you can’t make it to the show, the album is accompanied by a 132-page booklet that chronicles Cook’s last decade on the road. In addition to describing things for a living, I also ask musicians about tour life for a living (from the comfort of my cosy office chair) so his words should be right up my alley.
