Love’s Labour’s Lost hits the big screen
Love’s Labour’s Lost, William Shakespeare’s most confusingly titled play — does it mean that the labour of love has been lost, or that love is what labour has lost? — is also the latest to get the liveto-cinema treatment at Cineplex locations across Canada.
Directed by Barry Avrich — his fifth time filming a Stratford production — and featuring performances by Ruby Joy, Mike Shara, Sarah Afful and others, the 1590s comedy (another ’90s comeback?) tells the story of Ferdinand, king of Navarre, and three of his courtiers, who pledge to stay away from women for three years in order to concentrate on their studies.
Three guesses as to what happens next. Writing about the Stratford production in the National Post, Robert Cushman said the play “begins brilliantly” and ends like no other. Love’s Labour’s Lost screens on April 29.
