Saskatoon man worked in Alberta

-

A paramedic was killed in a crash while on his way to work Wednesday in Bonnyville, Alta., according to a news release from the Bonnyville Regional Fire Authority (BRFA).

“Cameron Griffiths was travelling to work in Bonnyville from his home in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, and was involved in a head-on collision near Lea Park,” the news release said Thursday.

Griffiths, 41, was driving a northbound SUV that lost control and collided with a southbound pickup truck on Highway 897, an RCMP news release said Wednesday.

Roads were icy at the time of the 9:40 a.m. collision.

Griffiths was pronounced dead at the scene, the release said.

The pickup’s male driver was not injured, the release said.

A female passenger was airlifted to an Edmonton hospital with serious, but non-life threatening injuries, and three other occupants of the truck were taken to local hospital with minor injuries.

Traffic was rerouted for several hours after the crash.

Griffiths “demonstrated a sheer joy in providing emergency medical care to the community and he will be missed by his coworkers, hospital staff and the people he helped in the community,” the BRFA release said.

Marc Moebis, executive director of the Alberta Paramedic Association, said Thursday the entire community is saddened by the tragedy.

A fund has been set up to help his wife with some of the expenses, he said.
