BARBER MAKES FRIENDS — ONE HAIRCUT AT A TIME

Eddy Mesho enjoys meeting customers from all walks of life, writes John Grainger.

Eddy Mesho likes making friends.

These days, Mesho is looking for some new friends after opening his traditional barber shop last month in the city’s Broadway area.

The transplanted Mesho arrived in Saskatoon in late summer from the West Coast and knew he wanted to continue his career of cutting hair — specifically, men’s hair. He has been working in barbershops since 2003 and knows his way around a head of hair.

“I enjoy it. I still enjoy it,” says Mesho. “The main thing for me is meeting new people from every walk of life. I like getting to know new people all the time.

“Many times, customers I have become my good friends. It’s a great way to do business.”

Mesho offers the usual services one might expect, such as haircuts, shaves and beard trimming. He’s very conscious about price, so he’s keeping his prices as low as he can.

“I don’t want to break someone’s wallet. I want to make sure I’m competitive in this area.”

Mesho is thrilled to have found a spot on Broadway to open his shop. “Honestly, I think I lucked out. This is such a great location.”

Mesho operates his shop on a first-come, first-served basis, so he doesn’t make appointments. He only makes friends.

After camping out near Squamish, B.C., for six days waiting for the shot, Arun Joseph had an epiphany. Photography was more than a passion, thought Joseph. It had become his life.

He has forged ahead in his brave new world by opening his store in Saskatoon in September where he offers all things photography, right from the click of the camera to the finished product and frame making.

A few years ago, Joseph did this work out of his basement, but it has grown into something much larger. He had a 9-to-5 day job, but his storefront is where his heart is now.

“For me, the key thing is I’m passionate about (photography),” says Joseph. “I enjoy the hustle and bustle of business, but I also have the creativity that I enjoy.”

His passion for photography has taken him around the world. He can count more than 40 countries he has visited to hone his photography skills, primarily of wildlife, including in Kenya and India.

Joseph is open to shooting weddings, family events, sporting events and anything else that can be documented visually. His website offers a glimpse of his talents and he recommends potential clients call him and discuss at length their needs.

Inside his shop, he has all the tools needed for making the perfect photo package, including professional tools to make sure the job is done right.

“For me, creating a frame is also a creative process I enjoy doing. And it’s going to be done well.”

Joseph did get his shot, by the way. It was of a bald eagle that flew directly over his head and he captured the bird’s flight in all its majesty.

Joseph knew if he waited and was patient, things would go his way — kind of like how his business has come to fruition.
