Barker opens with win at curling provincials

Defending champion Penny Barker, of Moose Jaw, won her openingdraw game Tuesday at the 2018 Viterra Scotties provincial women’s curling championship at the Northern Lights Palace in Melfort.
With the hammer, Barker counted one in the 10th end to clinch an 8-5 victory over Nancy Martin of Saskatoon’s Nutana Curling Club. Earlier, Barker stole one, one and two in the fourth, fifth and sixth ends, respectively.
Barker returns at the skip position with third Deanna Doig, second Lorraine Schneider and lead Danielle Sicinski. They came into this week’s Scotties as the No. 1 seed.
In other opening-draw action, Saskatoon Nutana’s Sherry Anderson defeated Candace Chisholm of Carlyle by a 6-4 score, Saskatoon Nutana’s Stefanie Lawton edged Kronau’s Ashley Howard 6-5 and Chantelle Eberle defeated North Battleford’s Robyn Silvernagle 8-5.
Results from Tuesday’s late evening draw were not available at press time.
Action resumes Wednesday with draws at 10 a.m., 3 p.m. and 8 p.m.
The championship then continues Thursday with draws at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., Friday at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., and Saturday at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. The semifinal goes Sunday at noon, with the final at 5 p.m. The winner of that final advances to the Canadian championship Jan. 27Feb. 4 in Penticton, B.C..
