KISSEL COVERS THE COUNTRY

Ambitious tour hits the major markets as well as smaller towns

Brett Kissel has decided to go all-in with his latest tour.

Rather than just major markets, the We Were That Song tour has 100 shows over two legs. A national tour in Canada with that many dates is challenging, given the small population.

“I believe that in the research we’ve done, this will be the largest domestic tour ever done in Canada,” said Kissel.

“Why not go to North Bay, Ont.? Why not go to the Territories? Why not go to Melfort? Why not go to Yorkton? They’re country fans like everybody else, so that was a big deciding factor in whether we would do this tour smaller, just hitting the major markets, or if we’d open the floodgates and go everywhere.”

We Were That Song is a bit of a departure for Kissel, who has climbed to the top of the Canadian country music scene with hits like Started with a Song, 3-2-1, Tough People Do and Airwaves.

Kissel pushed the envelope and with songs influenced by genres like rock, pop and EDM. Damn was recorded with Megadeth’s Dave Mustaine.

“The diversity that I wanted on this project has been noticed and the risk in making this record so different, so grand, so chaotic, so random, has been noticed and so far has been well received,” Kissel says.

Given the success of We Were That Song, Kissel doesn’t want to prematurely end its run just to get a second single out to the public.

“Every single is different, it’s dependent on its own ecosystem and its own lifespan,” said Kissel. “All that being said, I’m very, very thankful that We Were That Song is still doing well. But when the second single (Anthem) comes out, definitely when we’re on this tour, we’re going to be playing the hell out of that song from the stage, getting people primed and ready to hear it on the radio.”
