Organizers anticipate sellout for conversation with former first lady

Tickets on sale Friday for March event featuring Michelle Obama

-

Former U.S. first lady Michelle Obama will speak in Saskatoon next month before heading to Alberta for appearances in Edmonton and Calgary.

Obama will participate in a moderated conversation-style event at SaskTel Centre on Thursday, March 22 at 7 p.m. Tickets go on sale to the public Friday and will cost between $79 and $399. Obama will then head west; she is scheduled to speak in Edmonton at 12:30 p.m. on March 23 and in Calgary at 7 p.m. that same day.

Andy McCreath, a partner with tinePublic, which is organizing the event, said he imagines tickets will sell out quickly. Obama’s talk in Calgary has already sold out.

“We’re expecting it to reach beyond Saskatoon. We consider this to be a Saskatchewan event and we expect interest throughout the province to be high. Any time you can have one of the most high profile, most well-respected women in the world in your city or in your province, I would think the interest will be quite high,” he said.

McCreath said the event moderator and topics to be discussed have not yet been determined. Between 7,500 and 8,000 tickets will be available.

Obama is not the first high-profile speaker tinePublic has brought to Saskatchewan; the organization has previously organized events with Oprah Winfrey and Hillary Clinton.

Obama, 54, is the wife of Barack Obama, who was president of the United States for two terms from 2009-17. Michelle Obama is a lawyer and, as first lady, launched initiatives to combat childhood obesity, support veterans, encourage young people to continue education beyond high school and remove barriers that prevent young girls from around the world from going to school.
