Access Transit a valuable service

- Shirley Haines, Saskatoon

Access Transit is a service of the Saskatoon Transit System for persons with disabilities who are wheelchair bound, use walkers or have general mobility issues. The majority of passengers appear to be elderly.

It is essential to make this city easier for seniors to enjoy. Often enjoyment focuses on the ability to get around. Two notable current improvements for the disabled are wheelchair ramps at street corners throughout Saskatoon and Access Transit.

Access Transit is an excellent service which my husband George and I learned about after a second stroke left George partially paralyzed and unable to leave his wheelchair.

Access Transit enables us to visit our children’s homes, attend church regularly, keep medical appointments, get out to movies, concerts and theatre events and enjoy favourite restaurants.

The service is door-todoor; the drivers are courteous and helpful; the office staff on the telephone make every effort to provide buses at required times. Access Transit is certainly promoting Saskatoon as an “agefriendly city!”

The number of people using Access Transit is growing, and will continue to do so in the foreseeable future, particularly as our population ages.

As a part of planning Saskatoon Transit’s growth for years to come, the anticipated needs for Access Transit must be recognized.

George and I certainly encourage the continued development of our total transit system, including Access Transit, for an “age-friendly Saskatoon.”
