St. Joseph Guardians shine at Hoopla

Saskatoon’s Aden Bowman Bears settle for silver medal in 5A girls competitio­n

The Hoopla boys’ 5A basketball championsh­ip final had a familiar look to it on Saturday, as the St Joseph Guardians took on the Marion Graham Falcons in a rematch of the Saskatoon city final.

The results were also similar with the Guardians — who defeated the Falcons 91-68 in the city final — winning the provincial title with an 81-71 victory, improving on their fourth-place finish in 2017.

In the boys’ 5A bronze-medal game, the Holy Cross Crusaders won 78-56 over Yorkton Regional.

The girls’ city champion Aden Bowman Bears settled for a silver medal in girls’ 5A action, losing 6347 to Regina LeBoldus. LeBoldus also defeated St. Joseph in the 6858 in the quarter-finals.

Meanwhile, Prince Albert Carlton won the girls’ bronze medal with an 81-67 victory over the Centennial Chargers.

For the second year in a row, Weyburn and Moose Jaw Central met in the boys’ Hoopla final, and for the second year in row, Weyburn won the game, this time by a score of 98-76. In the bronze-medal game, Moose Jaw Peacock repeated as bronze-medal winners, defeating Moose Jaw Vanier 74-68.

On the girls’ side, Melfort narrowly edged out Estevan 60-56 to defend their Hoopla title and win the gold medal, while last year’s silver medallists Moose Jaw Peacock won their school’s second bronze medal of the tournament defeating Moose Jaw Central 90-43.

Regina Christian School came out on top in both the boys’ and the girls’ final. The boys repeated as champions, defeating Birch Hills 74-56, while the girls, who finished second last year, won 72-60 over Caronport.

In the bronze-medal games, Norquay earned a 75-55 victory over Clavet on the boys’ side, and Lumsden defeated Dalmeny 66-61 on the girls’ side.

Improving on their fourth-place finish in 2017, St. Brieux hit triple digits as they defeated Caronport 100-84 to win the boys’ title. Meanwhile, Saskatoon Christian School claimed the bronze medal with a 92-67 win over Osler VCA, who finished third in 2017.

Wynyard was once again on top of the girls’ results, defeating Asquith 72-37, while Regina Harvest City won the bronze with a 75-60 win over Canora.

Middle Lake defended their Hoopla title, winning 75-33 over Lake Lenore — last year’s bronze medallists — in the boys’ final, while Rocanville, who finished as the runners up in 2017, won the bronze medal 88-59 over Davidson.

On the girls’ side, it was a rematch of the 2017 final with Middle Lake taking on Kenaston, however, the results were reversed this time around as Middle Lake won 60-43. In the bronze-medal game, St. Brieux won 55-42 over Gladmar.
